RoRo vs Container Car Shipping: Which Should You Pick?
How each method actually moves your car
RoRo: port staff drive your car up a ramp into the ship's enclosed decks, where it is lashed down among hundreds of others, new factory cars included, then driven off at the destination port. No crane, no box, minimal handling. Container: your car is loaded into a 20-foot steel box (or shares a 40-footer with another car), blocked and strapped by a loading crew, sealed, craned aboard, and opened at destination. The container adds equipment, labor, and crane moves at both ends, which is exactly where its higher price comes from. The paperwork is identical either way, walked through in documents needed to export a car.
The cost gap, and why it exists
On the same lane, RoRo typically runs $300 to $900 less than container service for one car. A container costs more because you are renting the box, paying a crew to secure the car inside it, and paying crane lifts at two ports, while RoRo's cost is essentially deck space plus a short drive. Sharing a 40-foot container between two cars splits the box cost and narrows the gap, which is popular for families and dealers sending pairs. Ocean freight is only part of any overseas total: the truck leg from your door or auction to the port is its own price, which is the leg we run daily through our auction-to-warehouse network.
What RoRo will not take
RoRo's discipline is what keeps it cheap, and the rules are hard ones. The car must run, steer, and brake, because a human drives it aboard. It must be empty, nothing packed inside, ports enforce this at the gate. Electric and hybrid vehicles are refused on our RoRo lanes under lithium-battery rules, their path is explained in shipping an EV overseas. And the title must reach the port early, roughly three days before sailing, for customs clearance. Miss any of these and the car does not sail, so the honest move is telling us the car's real condition upfront.
When the container earns its premium
The car does not run. A container crew can winch and forklift a dead car into the box; RoRo cannot. The car is electric or hybrid. Containers are the standard EV route. Things travel with the car. A container legally carries spares, wheels, and in many trades personal effects, declared properly. The car is precious. A sealed box means nobody touches the car between loading crew and destination, which collectors value, the same logic as enclosed road transport. The destination's RoRo service is thin. Some ports see weekly container ships but rare RoRo calls, making the container faster door to door despite the identical ocean.
The one-minute decision
| Your situation | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Running gas car, nothing inside | RoRo | Cheapest, simplest, the industry default |
| Non-runner or project car | Container | Winched and secured in the box |
| EV or hybrid | Container | Battery rules bar it from our RoRo lanes |
| Parts or belongings travel too | Container | RoRo sails empty cars only |
| High-value classic or exotic | Container | Sealed steel, minimal handling |
| Two cars, same destination | Shared 40ft container | Splits the box, narrows the gap |

Your questions answered
Is RoRo cheaper than container shipping?
Yes, typically by $300 to $900 per car on the same lane, because RoRo skips the box rental, the securing crew, and the crane lifts. That is why it is the default for ordinary running cars worldwide.
Why is RoRo shipping so much cheaper?
The cost structure is just deck space and a short drive aboard. Container service adds equipment and labor at both ports, and all of that appears on your invoice. Cheap here does not mean worse, new factory cars cross oceans on RoRo decks every day.
Is RoRo safe for a normal car?
Yes. Cars ride inside enclosed decks, lashed to the deck, out of the weather, handled by professional port drivers. The main practical difference from a container is that port staff drive it briefly at each end.
Can I pack boxes in my car on a RoRo ship?
No, RoRo cars must sail empty, and ports physically inspect at the gate. If belongings or parts must travel with the car, that is the container's job, declared on the paperwork.
Does my car need to run and drive for RoRo?
Yes, it is driven aboard under its own power, so it must start, steer, and brake. A car that fails any of those goes by container with winch loading instead.
Can two cars share one container overseas?
Yes, a 40-foot container takes two ordinary cars, and splitting the box cost is the main way families and small dealers close the price gap with RoRo. Both cars clear customs on their own documents.
Is container shipping worth it for a regular sedan?
Usually not. For a running, empty, everyday car, the container premium buys little, which is why the global default for such cars is RoRo. The container earns its money in the exceptions, not the routine.
How much more does a container cost than RoRo?
Plan on roughly $300 to $900 more for a sole-use container on the same route, less if two cars share a 40-footer. Exact gaps move with the lane, the season, and equipment availability at the port.
Which is faster, RoRo or container?
Ocean time is the same ship speed either way. The door-to-door difference comes from schedules: lanes with frequent RoRo sailings favor RoRo, while thin RoRo destinations with weekly container service flip the answer.
Do RoRo ships sail from every US port?
No, RoRo calls concentrate at major vehicle ports on each coast. Part of our job is trucking your car from wherever it sits, home, dealer, or auction yard, to the right departure port for your lane.
Can a motorcycle travel by RoRo?
On many lanes yes, wheeled aboard and lashed, though some services want bikes crated into containers instead. Tell us the destination and we route it the way that lane actually works, as covered in our overseas motorcycle guide.
Who drives my car onto the ship?
Trained port and vessel staff, the same people loading manufacturer inventory. They move it up the ramp, park it in the lashing position, and the odometer gains only those few hundred feet.
